Leeches of Sri Lanka

 Little information about the leech...

The leech can be described as an animal that is feared and hated by humans. About 700 species of leeches have been identified, and about 100 of them are sea leeches.  About 90 are land leeches and the rest are freshwater leeches.  After both these water and land leeches cling to the body and suck blood, the places will itch and swell.

When the leech sucks blood, an enzyme called "Hirudin" is released to the bite to prevent blood clotting, so that the leech can suck as much blood as possible without any hindrance.

The closest relative of the leech, which belongs to the family of worms, is the gadevili panua.  There are different sizes of leeches and the largest leech is the giant leech known as the "Giant Amazon Leech" which is about 18 inches long.

Ground leeches, which are widely distributed in wet zone environments like Ratnapura, Badulla, Bandarawela, and in wet zone forests like rubber plantations, tea plantations, Ashritawat, Sinharajaya, Kannaliya, Nanakiadeniya, are usually 0.3 to 3 trenches long.

A leech, which can drink five times as much blood as an average, can fast for up to 5 years.  The leech, which is a bisexual animal, has male and female reproductive organs, and accordingly, the leech does not need to have sex to lay eggs and give birth to young.

  important ........

When the leech is hanging on the body, it should not be pulled out by hand.  In such cases they should be removed using Dettol liquid, salt liquid, soapy liquid or ash.  If the leech is pulled out by hand, the wound may fester and take a long time to heal.
